Mayweather won over not just only for the belt but also with the fortune. His last fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was confirmed the richest fight in boxing history with nearly $150 million in pay-per-view revenues, US cable network channel Showtime, said last Thursday.
The gross of the Saturday’s smashing super welterweight championship of Mayweather and Alvarez in Las Vegas surpassed the record of $136 million that was generated by Mayweather’s 2007 showdown with Oscar de la Hoya. Showtime said that the fight attracted some 2.2 million pay-per-view buys which is second all-time to 2.48 million buys of the Mayweather/De la Hoya fight. Showtime said that the buys were still added up but it already beaten the third most popular fight in the boxing history (1.97 million) between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson in 1997. The fight, which the tickets priced an average rate of $1,200, also set another boxing record for gate revenues grossing more than $20 million.
The fight was witnessed by over 22.1 million crowd and 5.9 million households, making it as the highest-programmed ever in Mexico where Alvarez, whose alias was “Canelo” in the said place, is remarked as one of the nation’s popular stars.
Mayweather and Alvarez’s fight went to a 12-round range where Mayweather stringed his unbeaten 45-0 record. Alvarez suffered his first loss of his career, falling to 42-1-1. #
